€90 Million Funding Boost for Urban Innovation in the EU

The European Commission has launched a substantial funding opportunity, unveiling a third call for proposals under the European Urban Initiative (EUI) worth €90 million. This initiative aims to bolster sustainable urban development across the EU by supporting innovative projects that drive the green and digital transitions.

Date: 23. 05. 2024

The €90 million call is a significant opportunity for local authorities, research institutions, and private sector partners across the EU to obtain funding for pioneering urban projects. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) will co-finance 80% of project costs, with each project receiving up to €5 million. This financial support will not only aid the creation and implementation of innovative solutions but also promote the transfer of knowledge and adaptation of successful projects to other EU cities, ensuring a widespread societal and economic impact.

Projects should address one of the following priorities:

  • Energy Transition - develop and test innovative solutions for affordable, secure, and cleaner local energy systems.
  • Technology in Cities - utilize emerging technologies and digital solutions to enhance public services, urban governance, quality of life, citizen engagement, and urban safety and accessibility.

EUI facilitates cities in testing innovative solutions to address unique urban challenges based on themes set by the Commission. These solutions are designed to be transferable and replicable across other EU cities. Previous calls have focused on supporting the New European Bauhaus and themes such as greening cities, sustainable tourism, and leveraging talent in shrinking cities.

“Cities act as centres for innovation and play a vital role in propelling the green and digital transitions on the ground. With this third EUI call for proposals, we are giving cities an opportunity to explore the potential of emerging technologies in the energy sector and beyond, leading the way to a climate-neutral Europe. Urban areas of all sizes will not be left behind – we will ensure that they innovate, moving with the times, to become more inclusive and accessible to all Europeans.” - Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms
